AT&T and Navigil Enable Proactive Wellness Monitoring with Mobile Wristwatch

AT&T is launching the Navigil wellness wristwatch in the U.S. for users, family, friends and trusted caregivers.

Key Takeaways:

  • Proven technology is coming to the U.S. to help enhance wellness monitoring.
  • Innovative wellness watch adapts well to a variety of use cases.

Wellness watches are reshaping the way care is delivered across various settings, including hospital discharge, in-home care, senior-living communities and individuals with disabilities. These devices play an important role in keeping users connected to the caregivers who can improve outcomes with proactive and personalized support while saving costs.

Navigil, a leading specialist in mobile wearable products used by aging adults for wellness and personal safety purposes, has made their mobile wristwatches available in the U.S. The wellness wristwatch has AT&T Network Optimized certification and uses the AT&T nationwide LTE-M cellular network and supports IoT applications with lower costs, longer battery life and small form factors.

The Navigil wristwatch monitors heart rate, activity levels, sleep patterns and more. The smart phone app, which is available for both iOS and Android, allows family members and caregivers to view the data and track the watch wearer's wellness trends.

The Navigil mobile wearable is available to businesses including assisted living facilities and care organizations. It also has up to two weeks of battery life as a mobile phone, 100% secure SOS call routing and a wellness dashboard.

"Connectivity is not just a feature; it is a necessity for connected devices. Without it, they are just inert devices collecting data. With it, they enable calls for help, voice calls and immediate notification of alarms," said Matti Räty, President/CEO of Navigil. "These devices are helping bridge the gap among the user, family members, friends and trusted caregivers with seamless communication."

"The Navigil watch is a valuable tool for seniors and caregivers," said Joe Drygas, vice president, Government, Education & Medical, AT&T. "Whether it's reminders to take medication, encouraging activity or notifying caregivers in case of an emergency, these watches help ensure users receive the support they need, when they need it."

If you are interested in viewing the Navigil watch, drop by booth #2261 at HIMSS. Hope to see you there!

Critical problem with S1/S3 DNA sim (+358) watches

Update 11.10.2023 13:55. Since 11.10.2023 11:22 calls from outside of Finland have been working normally. The issue is now fixed.

Update 11.10.2023 10:59. Navigil number space was added to the Numpac number space. The verifying service does not get the numbers automatically so this issue is still not fully fixed. It was promised that the fix will be finished today.

Update 9.10.2023 14:59. The fix for the problem has been promised to happen 11.10.2023 between 9-10 Helsinki time.

Update 9.10.2023 11:19. Mobile operator DNA has informed us that the reason for the problem is the new requirement to prevent fake calls from Finnish numbers from abroad to Finland. This was put in effect last week and the Navigil number space was not included in the allowed numbers. The change to fix this can only be done on Wednesday. No specific time for the fix was informed.

Update 8.10.2023 11:25. For customers who have access to Navigil Service for 580 there is a report which will show call attempts from last 24h. The report will show the status to be OK if any call from that number has succeeded and NO REPORT if no call reports were recorded. The report is available for Company Admin users. Name of the report is RAFAELCALLATTEMPTS

7.10.2023

There is currently a critical problem with Navigil watches using DNA sim cards when roaming. These are sim-cards having a phone number starting with +358. The issue does not affect watches which are using SCAIP for the phone calls.

All other functionality is working but when starting a direct call from a watch to a number or ARC the call never connects. This includes the help request calls made by pressing the alarm key or the speed dial calls from call menu.

Unfortunately this issue has been going on for some time. It was first examined as singular watch related incidents and it appears that the problem has started Sep 30th. After that date no roaming DNA calls have been arrived from affected watches.

There a some other reasons when calls appear to be failed for example if the user cancels the call before it is connected or if the network drops right after the call was started but those cannot be separated from this issue.

In the device log there will be a visible row showing Alarm call status -text. Normally after this there will be a report of the call but in this case the report is not there because the call never connects.

A workaround to be informed about such calls is to add a new email notification for SOS call initiated. Then when the user presses the alarm key there will be an email about the call. If no call will arrive then it would be possible to call the watch from the ARC or by designated care persons. This requires manual verification from the Rafael service.

The problem is under examination at DNA Finland Oy service desk. After understanding that these might not be single watch related cases the first ticket was opened 3.10.2023. Only late at 5.10.2023 it was noticed that none of the roaming calls worked and the ticket was updated to escalate the priority. Today 7.10.2023 we received information from DNA service desk that this was escalated to their 24/7 network team but unfortunately the weekend team was not able to find a solution. Their specialist will be available Monday 9.10.2023 and they will continue solving the problem.

We will keep this post updated when we have new information.

Aging-in-place with the help of a smart service

Navigil, a company focused on digital services in the social and health care sector, has developed a solution that enables older people to live longer safely and independently in their own homes. The developed service and the safety wristwatch enable collection of wellness information remotely and sharing results and care tasks with relatives and, if necessary, with professionals.

The health and wellness market has long been in global transformation. Increasingly aging population affects the resourcing of care at many levels. The situation worsened during the corona pandemic. The resilience of nursing staff is being tested and there is an increasing shortage of care resources. Often the best solution for everyone is to enable older people to age-in-place independently at home.

A digital solution for everyday safety

Modern and easy to use services are available to make everyday life easier and improve safety. The wristwatch developed by Navigil and the data collected with it can be used in many ways. With the help of the service, you can easily monitor your loved one's wellness. However, the solution differs from other safety watches in that the customizable service seamlessly connects relatives and, if necessary, care providers. Family members can monitor user's wellness and, if changes in daily routines or long term trends occur, the user can be contacted immediately via the phone features of the watch. The watch can independently alert for help, for instance due to a fall or immobility. Data collected by the watch can be viewed on a computer and now also with the new Share and Care App on a smartphone.

Global demand

Navigil's solution is already in use in 30 countries and the success in global markets continues. There is a worldwide demand for Finnish technology expertise. In Finland, you can inquire about the service directly from Navigil or from companies that provide care services.

  • Demand for digital wellness solutions is growing rapidly. By developing new and easy-to-use solutions, we make everyday life easier for seniors and enable a cost-effective way to improve the quality of life. At the same time, we reduce the worries of relatives when information about our loved one is easily obtained with the help of an intelligent service, says CEO Matti Räty.

HIMSS22: Tech multiplies health resources

Information is the lifeblood of medicine and health information technology is destined to be the circulatory system for that information. — David Blumenthal, MD, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology

This is a documented discussion between Aki Kuivalainen, Founder & CEO at Predicell (https://predicell.com/) and Matti Räty, President / CEO and founder, Navigil. I was very happy of having the opportunity to get these two major influencers together for an exchange of views on the big impending changes in the health sector.

Predicell is a pioneering enterprise in providing tools to promote better collecting, processing, and understanding of the power and potential of wellbeing data. Navigil is a caring company that provides industry benchmark services and wearable wellness products used by active elderly but also older adults needing support.

Where have all the nurses gone?

WHO reports that the world is expected to have more than 1.5 billion people over 65 by 2050, more than doubling from 2019. Of course, living longer does not always mean we will be leading a healthier life. The burden of chronic disease management is high and can be expected to be much higher.

According to the European Chronic Disease Alliance, 9 out of 10 Europeans die from chronic disease, with 70% to 80% of all healthcare euros spent on chronic disease management to the tune of €700 billion per annum and expected to rise dramatically. The Alliance further notes that only 3% of those euros are spent on prevention today, with 97% spent on reactive treatment.

At the same time, we are facing a huge nursing shortage which will seriously impact patient care.

Matti Räty refers to a long-term study done by Mercer, with main findings about the upcoming challenges and changes for healthcare:

1. A shortage of labor will limit availability of municipal home care service 2. Primary care will increasingly be provided by non-physicians 3. Even though surpluses of nursing talent in some areas exist, overall shortage is huge

The graying of doctors and nurses will result in a tight labor market. The pace of retirement and nurses permanently leaving the profession is increasing alarmingly. This was already called upon by experts before the pandemic, but COVID-19 created several negative effects on health professionals via various factors including increased patient load and risk of infection.

Injecting optimism into the market

Aki Kuivalainen also pointed out that even though the salaries of nurses are admittedly too low, there are several factors to consider regarding recruiting and retaining the workforce. Aki mentioned the need to build a highly attractive and modernized employee value proposition.

Matti and Aki both agreed that the salary threshold for income satiation or in other words the cutoff point where more money would make you happier is still far away from what nurses are earning right now. Simultaneously, there must be several means to be used for improving the attractiveness of the nursing profession.

According to Mercer's study Gen Xers may be drawn to retirement savings plans (401 k Plan), but for instance, Gen Zers are looking for maximum schedule flexibility, work-from-home options and same-day pay. So, the upcoming workforce base their career choices on more than just pay and perks.

Assistive tech for homecare

Matti and Aki had some interesting viewpoints on how exploring less human-intense technologies for providing access to care. A relocation of investments to homecare and assistive technologies would automatically ease the workload of health professionals.

Aki said perhaps provokingly that technology is an enabler, not just to optimize, but to maximize access to care. Proper data collection and service design can allow resources to be relocated to where they can be used more efficiently.

Matti referred to a Finnish study about senior citizens and their visits to health stations being unproductive in many cases. 3 out of 4 visits didn't lead to any actions or medical interventions. These checkups could have been carried out remotely with the right technological solutions. Aki continued that this would also help in focusing the workforce to where there is a greater and more urgent need. Helsinki City found that when nurses utilized remote visits, they increased customer encounters tenfold.

Rebooting healthcare

Matti and Aki reflected on the paradigm change of healthcare from previous reactive damage control centered activities to being increasingly preventive and patient centered. Both also underlined that "sick care" has undeniable benefits for relieving pain, suffering, and serving a vital purpose in a variety of emergency events. Still, purely treating the symptom of an illness or condition, without addressing the underlying cause is doing nothing for promoting general health, and wellness. Matti said that it is much more expensive to cure an illness, than to work on the preventive part of the issue. Now with the increasing age of the population, many chronic illnesses can be postponed or prevented by preventive care. Aki said that one of his favorite sayings is "The best healthcare is one that is never needed".

Care model transformation

Care model transformation is already happening. Demand is shifting to telecare and other digitally enabled care models because they are attractive to consumers and less labor intensive. Both Matti and Aki are certain that even seniors will accept the new technology solutions that enable data collection. Matti said that if elderly persons are motivated, they will use the devices for collecting data relevant to their health and wellness. Aki told us about a study about acceptance of data-driven operating models done among seniors; acceptance was 97 %. The 3 % in denial consisted mostly of people who already had various cognitive challenges.

Another up-and-coming form of the care model transformation was described by Matti and Aki as the blended care approach to elderly care: Seniors remain in their existing homes supported by family and friends, assisted by responsive and technologically adept services. Experiences and outcomes have been as good as, or even better, than of those staying in assisted-living facilities or nursing homes – and the costs are lower, too.

Emerging technology helping both seniors and caregivers

Matti and Aki both agree that digital tools and wearable technology (e.g., watches with sensors) can help in the care of chronic conditions by monitoring symptoms and long-term trends — both for users benefit and to communicate with caregivers. The biggest benefit will be in the prevention of health problems, improving wellness and enabling ageing in place.

Globally, there is an urgent need for enhanced capacity for home care and caregivers of elderly family members; many believe this need can be addressed, at least in part, through technology.

Navigil Teams with AT&T for U.S. Launch of Wellness Wristwatch

LTE-M Mobile Wearable for mPERS and Wellness Monitoring Provides Longer Battery Life

  • Navigil, a leading manufacturer of wearable AI-powered wellness solutions, helps aging persons to live at home much longer with confidence.
  • Navigil chooses AT&T to enable services across the U.S., completes U.S. certifications and has nationwide cloud services ready.
  • The launch of the stylish Navigil 580 mobile mPERS and wellness tracker wristwatch featuring industry benchmark battery life is a game changer for the mobile mPERS market.

Navigil, a leading specialist in wearable products used by active older adults for wellness and personal safety purposes, has chosen AT&T to enable the launch of its solution in the U.S. Navigil provides a comprehensive, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered wellness solution that consists of sensor-equipped Navigil 580 mobile wristwatches and online dashboards. The wristwatch features emergency messaging and automated alarms with location information. Wristwatches utilize AT&T's nationwide LTE-M cellular network that has been designed to support Internet of Things applications with lower costs, longer battery life, and smaller form factors.

"We're excited to be part of a solution that enhances quality of life, extends independent living, and provides peace of mind," said Joe Drygas, vice president, AT&T Healthcare Industry Solutions. "This wellness monitoring wristwatch is another example of how our technology can help transform lives."

Battery life is critical for mPERS (Mobile Personal Emergency Response Device) applications as well as remote wellness monitoring. Navigil's investments into ultra-low power hardware and embedded software design together with the AT&T LTE-M cellular network's power-saving features, minimize the risk of a drained-out battery. The Navigil 580 battery life is measured in weeks rather than in days. This is in a different category in comparison to regular consumer smartwatches or fitness devices that may require daily charging.

Wellness monitoring prolongs independent and safe living at home

Navigil has implemented Amazon Web Services (AWS) based cloud services in conjunction with resilient private APNs hosted at AT&T data centers in Texas and Virginia.

"It is extremely important that our services are safe and have high availability. In many cases, people using our products depend on them. Because a lot of valuable wellness related information is processed, we have created a reliable and robust infrastructure together with AT&T. It is comprehensive, fault tolerant and secure, as required by our customers and personal data security regulations," emphasizes Matti Räty, Navigil's CEO.

"Ultimately, we enable elderly persons to live in their homes with a peace of mind to them and their families. Wellness monitoring features that we have added to mPERS functions can significantly postpone the need to move into a sheltered care facility," Räty says, "and preventive care can help avoid hospitalization".

AT&T providing IoT-operations, regulatory certifications passed, worldwide attention

Navigil has built required communication infrastructure services with AT&T. AT&T is providing SIP trunk services for emergency messaging services from the wristwatch to landline and mobile phones in addition to IoT-based operations including mobile data. Doubled direct connect links between resilient private APNs and AWS cloud based services are part of the implemented infrastructure.

Around the world, Navigil is appreciated for its design and technical expertise and the company is presently experiencing huge attention from new customers expressing strong appetite for Navigil 580. "Worldwide, we have a growing number of new customers either purchasing, testing or evaluating our solution. We are now in production with the solution and supplying our European customers. Now that the infrastructure is ready and certification processes are completed, we are starting large scale pilots in the U.S.," Matti Räty concludes.

Navigil's solution features alarm call routing, notification services and wellness trend data analytics. Activity tracking and wireless sensors enable early detection of changes in wearer's wellness and timely corrective actions. Navigil 580 is the world's smallest analogue wristwatch with LTE-M communication, GPS/GLONASS/beacon location, activity and wellness sign monitoring features.

The Story of a Design

"People think that stories are shaped by people. In fact, it's the other way around." — Terry Pratchett, Famous fantasy author

I have always been fascinated by the fact that many, especially successful products, and services have a story of how and where they were born. What values do they rely on and what kind of problem do they solve? At its best, how was the wonderful harmony of technology and design achieved? I decided to find out.

Because of the status quo in our lives, it has become smaller, quieter, and filled with simple routines. For many, our footprints have shrunk to blocks. Going to new places, meeting new people and doing new inspiring things have been absent for too long. Personally, I have tried to learn something from these restrictions. At least this sudden experience has given me an education in what aging will bring us, and certainly not the best aspects.

The Cambridge dictionary describes storytelling as, "The activity of writing, telling, or reading stories." So, how does this apply to design?

Design is more than just finding the best way to convince someone to buy or make a product appealing. If a story behind a product is compelling, that will be the difference between someone glancing, and someone purchasing. Telling a story via design choices can make that difference manifest.

Design can use storytelling as a tool to build empathy and create a mood. The designer needs to be able to tell a story with cues like shapes, colors, materials and most importantly, the feel. How does it feel to touch, grip, and physically experience the product?

We are all made of stories

In an episode of the tv show "Modern Family," one of the characters has a hard time selling gift wrap for a school project, until his stepdad comes in and says, "You are not selling gift wrap, you're selling Christmas. The excitement of opening presents. The taste of eggnog."

A design, to effectively tell a story, needs to create a world, generate a need, and introduce the solution. The storytelling goal is to create empathy in the user. It goes beyond picking pretty colors and shapes. Design helps support and elevate the story as well as the experience.

Design for seniors

An overall decline in physical and mental activity may result in visible and even drastic changes to our parent's appearance, the standard of life, and emotional well-being. The more aware we are of how aging can affect them, and what options are available to them as seniors and us as caring adult children, the better for all involved.

The global population is aging. In many industrial countries, almost one in five people are over age 65. As people age, gradual changes occur in vision, hearing, balance, coordination, and memory. Products, communication materials, and the physical environment must be thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of people of all ages.

Designing for older adults is inclusive design: it accommodates a range of physical and cognitive abilities and promotes simplicity, flexibility, and ease of use for people of any age.

The principle of Wellspan Research and Design, Glen Hougan describes the state of senior design; "Too many of the products available to our senior population have that smell of a hospital about them or are cranky, stupid and tacky. They reflect an aging narrative that is often ageist and more reflective of our fear of aging".

"Recognizing the need is the primary condition for design." – Charles Eames

Case Navigil

I had the opportunity to discuss about the design of Navigil 580 wellness wristwatch with company founder, CEO Matti Räty and Tapio Selby, Manager of Devices. Both have been deeply involved in product development of the Navigil 580 safety wristwatch and the advanced SaaS service that connects the user to family, loved ones and professional caregivers.

Matti Räty said that the idea of a Navigil safety wristwatch story got started when a close relative had a slip and fall accident and there did not seem to be a suitable tool for the person to call for help and monitoring the loved one's recovery and wellbeing. This time it all ended well, because relatives went to see how the fallen person was doing earlier than scheduled. This happened in 2011 and at that time wearable monitors were massive, clumsy and with limited features.

Tapio Selby continues that there was a clear need for a wristwatch that would be stylish and good looking. It should be something that seniors would be proud to wear, without being labelled as "old" and "patients".

To combine top tech with classy design was a big challenge. The watch had to look smashingly good but also be highly functional in all conditions. I learned that top technology, especially the internal antenna was hard to fit into such a small device. Also, when designing the products first generation, they had to decide what features should be in the product and what features should not. A comprehensive consumer survey was conducted to decide the precise needs of the users.

One of the important skills in engineering and designing a new product is making tough decisions about how to weigh the risk of a feature with its potential value add and to make the call as to whether it should be in the first generation, or a later version.

The Navigil 580 is in its 3rd generation and is now the world's smallest analog wristwatch with LTE-M mobile phone, GPS location, activity and wellness indicators monitoring with wireless beacon features. All this in a timeless classic look!

Design matters

Businesses can reach a wide audience with their design choices. By including a story in their design, they'll be able to be heard above the noise and create an engaging, iconic product.

Remote Wellness Monitoring Raises Growing Attention in the UK

"How is grandad doing, and has he been following doctor's orders to have a daily one-hour walk? Let's check that from the online dashboard of his wellness wristwatch, and then call him".

"Oh, there's an automatic alarm from Mrs. Brown from Bridge Lane. It seems she has not moved for three hours. We need to send a team to check what's up".

Preventative care with AI-powered wellness monitoring has become very attractive in the UK. The leading European technology provider Navigil is witnessing a clear surge in demand for new solutions that support active aging people who want to enjoy a long independent life.

"More and more elderly people seek the comfort of safe and secure living at home, and so remote monitoring is becoming more popular than ever," tells Mike Hemmings, Navigil's newly appointed VP for Global Sales. To address the fast changing environment, the company has also opened a new UK subsidiary in line with its global investment in sales and support infrastructure.

"There is an increasing pressure on the social care system for preventative care solutions driven by technology. Over the last 12 months, the pandemic, as sad as it has been, has served to heighten the need for technology enabled care," Hemmings says.

Navigil offers a comprehensive, AI-powered wellness solution based on its new 580 wristwatch with a market leading up to 4-week battery life. The Navigil 580 is the world's smallest analogue wristwatch with LTE-M mobile phone, GPS/GLONASS/beacon location, and activity and wellness trend monitoring features. Its activity tracking and wireless sensors enable early detection of changes in the wearer's wellness and timely corrective actions.

Careline Care: "Excellent aesthetics and technology"

"Careline Care has been evaluating the 580 watch with GPS and wellness tracker for the past six months, and we have found the aesthetics, the technology, both hardware and portal to be excellent. We see the development and the technology behind the 580 to be a game changer in the UK and globally," says Bradford Rogers, CEO of Careline Care Limited.

Navigil's solution is white labelled so that partners can modify it and provide it under their own brand. It is designed to be stylish, easy to use, to work everywhere, and to integrate easily into a care provider's platform of choice.

"Having worked with Navigil's team for many years, we have seen how they strive for excellence. Now, working with the UK team and having the support closer to home has also made a difference! Careline Care has ordered the 580's and we look forward to shipment."

Plenty of large scale customer pilots starting worldwide

The tangible part of Navigil's solution, the 580 wristwatch, is equipped with sensors and mobile LTE-M connectivity including voice and automated alarms. The wearer can also make phone calls directly from the wristwatch, which is connected to Navigil's online dashboard. The solution includes wellness trend data analytics, alarm call routing, and notification services.

"The product development of our leading-edge technology places us in an excellent position. The UK's telecare sector is excited about it, and our UK subsidiary is engaged with numerous important new customers. We are working closely through their respective pilots and the medium-term outlook is very solid," Mike Hemmings tells.

UK customer projects span from centralised and local government to insurance companies, private pay elderly monitoring companies, and sheltered housing providers. Around the world, Navigil benefits from its technological front runner position, and it is winning new customers.

"On top of new customers utilizing the product, we have over 50 customers either testing or evaluating our solution. We are starting large scale pilots with major players involving thousands of units in total," says Matti Räty, Navigil's CEO.

A market front runner position thanks to early LTE-M investment

Worldwide, the low power LTE-M communications technology is the strategic choice of prominent mobile network operators. LTE-M is part of the 5G specification.

"Navigil's early investment into this technology positions the company as a front runner in the market. As 2G and 3G network technologies near their sunset, longevity can be provided only by future proof technologies such as LTE-M," Matti Räty concludes.

The Summer of Hugs?

Summer is just around the corner, but gosh what a year it has been. The pandemic has exhausted all of us, especially our elderly citizens. Due to the isolation, time feels heavy and draining. Monday was a week, April seemed like an eternity. Grief, anxiety, tedium, loss of control, restriction of movement, none of them rejuvenating, has been a part of our regimen. But now it's May and sun seems to brighten up our spirits, too.

Humans of all ages are designed to move and progress. The importance of physical activity is even more important as one gets older. Now it is a challenge for many elderly citizens to go for walks with friends or relatives.

Aging in place should be a good thing

For those seniors who are living in their own home, especially those living alone, it is potentially a very frightening time. In many cases, they are isolated from loved ones as well as their social support system. Some are worried about running necessary errands to the grocery store or pharmacy. Others are putting off important doctor's visits for fear of crossing paths with an infected person. It is potentially a very lonely and stressful situation for them, and one that could have dire long term health consequences.

An overall decline in physical and mental activity may result in visible and even drastic changes to our parent's appearance, the standard of life, and emotional well-being. The more aware we are of how aging can affect them, and what options are available to them as seniors and us as caring adult children, the better for all involved.

The well-being of our parents or grand parents is our ultimate wish as they age and live out the last years of their lives. Elderly care means considering a family member's emotional, mental and physical well-being.

94-year old WWII veteran John Gould describes his situation: "If you are an older person living alone, where you have to worry with utilities or tripping over rugs, those are the vulnerable people…that would be the pits right now." He noted that those seniors who are living on their own without a support system are likely feeling extremely fearful and isolated during these trying times.

The solution on your wrist

As restrictions are eased up in some areas and the share of fully vaccinated people is growing, our older loved ones can finally start going for walks and perhaps meet the family and their friends. The trend of supporting tech solutions for keeping in touch with senior citizens during the pandemic will continue and grow in the future. Zoom meetings, virtual traveling and video chats with relatives have become a standard for many elderly people living an independent life. With the increased freedom of mobility for all us, it is important that we can stay assured of the safety of our parents and grandparents. Wearable smart devices are a solution that can provide the caring clan with important information about the wellbeing and health of our older family members. Personally, I also think it is a nice way of showing how much we care about them.

Navigil Service and Navigil 580 wellness watch is the perfect example of a solution for persons wishing to live an independent life. The discreet analog wristwatch does not label wearers as persons in need of help. The LTE-M phone, GPS location and activity monitoring features enable calling for help with a single push of a button and locating wandering dementia sufferers quickly, as well as early alert on worrisome long term wellbeing trends.

Thanks to technology, we will all be increasingly connected in the future, hopefully also to our relatives, even if they live far from us. Still, real human contact is the true blessing in our lives. Hopefully this summer will be remembered as the summer of hugs!

Watching the Grey Future

Congratulations! We have come very far. The 30 years will be the first time in history where senior citizens make up a significant percentage of the human population. This is a true success story, a triumph for humanity in our collective quest to live longer and more active lives well into our silver years. On the other hand, this tsunami of senior citizens also presents some very serious challenges to our society and to our economy.

By the 2020s, the youngest Civics (born before 1945) will enter their 90s while the youngest Boomers (born between 1946-64) will enter their 70s. Lastly, the Gen Xer's will start turning 50 by the end of this decade. This represents a big proportion of the world population, that will enter their late senior years.

This growing grey population will impact old age pension programs negatively. An influx of new pensioners and the fact that they will pull claims from the system for longer stretches of time will put stress on the system as it is now. Governments have to react. First step for many countries will be by increasing the retirement age. Also giving senior citizens more control over when they choose to retire and how long they stay in the workforce. This approach will become increasingly popular as the average human lifespan is pushing over 100 years. Thanks to increased life expectancy and advanced medical care, people will have more years of healthy life than ever before.

Governments will also try to reduce our aging population's overall societal costs:

  • Re-engineering elderly care to enhance senior citizens independence
  • Improving senior citizen's physical health

Aging in place

Governments around the world will not be able to handle a large influx of seniors needing long-term and personal care. Already, countries are faced with lack of nursing manpower and available nursing home space. This is why governments support initiatives for decentralizing senior care and to let seniors age in the most comfortable environment – their home.

Traditional, increasingly expensive, one-size-fits-all nursing homes are being replaced by new evolving senior housing options, such as: independent living, co-housing, home-care and memory-care. Fortunately, new technologies will facilitate this transition.

"AN ELDERLY PERSON AT HOME IS LIKE A LIVING GOLDEN TREASURE." – Chinese saying

With a little help from my watch

Wearable wellbeing monitoring devices will begin being actively prescribed to seniors by their doctors and recommended by health care institutions. These devices will constantly monitor the biological and eventually the psychological state of their senior wearers, sharing that data with their younger family members and remote medical supervisors. This will ensure they can proactively address any noticeable drop in optimum health.

Navigil Service and Navigil 580 wellness watch is the perfect example of a solution for persons wishing to live an independent life. The discreet analog wristwatch does not label wearers as persons in need of help. The LTE-M phone, GPS location and activity monitoring features enable calling for help with a single push of a button and locating wandering dementia sufferers quickly as well as early alert on worrisome long term wellbeing trends.

One of the best things about the Navigil solution is that as being only 58 years old, I can start monitoring my activities and shifts in wellbeing levels. Then as time goes by, the watch and system can first be connected to family members and then later, when needed, to caretakers. Because of all of this, growing old does not feel so bad, I feel like ending this rant with the words of English poet Robert Browning:

"GROW OLD ALONG WITH ME! THE BEST IS YET TO BE, THE LAST OF LIFE, FOR WHICH THE FIRST WAS MADE."

The Game Is Not Over

Are video games bad for you? That's what they said about rock'n roll…

A study conducted by North Carolina State University has shown seniors who play video games regularly or even occasionally report better overall emotional well-being.

The history of video games goes back as far as the 1950s, but it wasn't until the 1970s when video gaming really started to become the new craze for the youth. The first generations of home consoles and the booming arcade industry assured that almost every kid at least tried some of those early games. Many of us in their 60s right now have fond memories of playing the coin operated game called Computer Space. Some years later the ball and paddle type game Pong emerged and was one of the biggest hits for early home consoles.

Granny is shooting trolls

A growing number of seniors are re-warming their long-lost relationship with video games. Although teenage boys remain the most avid video game players, they're being joined at the console by another group — their grandparents.

More than 10 million Americans age 50 and older became active video gamers over the past three years, according to an AARP survey. In 2016, there were 40 million senior gamers, a number that's mushroomed to about 51 million in 2019, the survey found.

Video games that offer a sense of online community and interaction are popular with older gamers because of the isolation many seniors feel, especially in these problematic days of various degrees of lockdown, due to the Covid-19 virus.

Grandpa is fighting Alzheimer's

With an estimated 5.5 million seniors suffering from Alzheimer's in the U.S. alone, treatment methods are heavily scrutinized and highly valued. Amazingly, recent research has even demonstrated a link between playing video games and a reduced risk of Alzheimer's.

CBS News wrote a story about an avid video gamer, Michelle Kelley age 73: Forza Horizon 4, a car racing game on Xbox. "It's got cars that I currently own and cars that I owned as a teen," Kelley, 73, said, mentioning the 1997 BMW E36 he likes to use in the game. "The one in the game is a coupe and mine is a convertible, so I can drive my own car in the game."

A study of 140 seniors over 63 years old concluded that both regular and occasional video gamers reported greater well-being, social functioning, and health than non-gamers. In addition, they reported significantly lower rates of depression among people who play video games than those who don't.

Complex strategy games have benefits for mental health, according to research. Such games help to improve memory and enhance cognitive skills. Playing these games can train the brain to maintain focus in other areas. The key is to improve at the game and continually be learning. Ezriel Kornel, M.D., of Brain and Spine Surgeons of New York in Westchester County, says new synapses form between the neurons in the brain when it's learning something new, and these connections can be used in other situations.

Serious senior snipers

The trend looks to be catching on elsewhere too. In the final match of the Senior CS:GO World Cup at Dreamhack Summer, one of Europe's biggest gaming festivals, in June 2019, the Silver Snipers from Sweden defeated the Grey Gunners, a Finnish senior e-sports team.

The average age of the five-member Silver Snipers team, which was recruited and sponsored by technology company Lenovo in 2018, is 67. One of its members is Inger 'Trigger Finger' Grotteblad, 68. In gaming parlance, Grotteblad is slowly becoming a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive veteran, having spent close to 1,000 hours playing the game, which she first came to know about through her grandchildren.

So, maybe in the near future, being a semi serious FPS (first person shooter) player myself, I might be able to start my third career as an E-sports professional in the senior category! Until then, I'll just keep shooting monsters and saving the Universe. Because it feels good!

I Want Lots of Laughing Wrinkles

If you want to stay pain-free, reduce the risk of mental illness and be able to stay independent well into old age, you should keep moving. There is strong evidence that people who are active have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia, some cancers and depression. So being a rolling stone has some amazing benefits!

My life has always been very active. Maybe it can be considered as an advantage to have been born before computers, video games and social media overwhelmed children's and teenager's lives. I got a good start from that perspective. As kids we were always playing outside. Home was just a place to eat and sleep.

Later in life, I eventually got into competitive sports and ended up as the second best heavyweight bodybuilder at the 1997 World Games. After my retirement from semi professional sports I continued working out and doing lots of endurance sports as mountain biking and skitouring. At the same time I also worked a lot, spent long days sitting in the office and on top of that started playing first person shooter video games. Slowly I skipped the routine of daily workouts. My bodyweight went up and it may have caused a knee injury that kept me of the trails and gym for 6 months. Finally I paid the price. I was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism and was hospitalized for the first time in my life.

Now at the age of 58 I try to get back into shape, but it is not as easy as it was 10 or 20 years ago. The current Covid situation is not making things easier, especially gym workouts seem a little bit too risky right now. Who wants to be in the same room with a bunch of sweating, heavily breathing people? The forest has been my gym this year.

It would be nice to be able to continue exploring the nature well after 60 and still feel safe, even when doing solo hikes. I know that one should bike or hike with friends, but experiencing nature by myself is much more intense and positively emotional. There are some wearable tech solutions that could help me to stay active. I have owned a couple of sport watches to monitor workouts and adventures in the mountains and on the trails. Those watches are ok, but haven't got the functions that would be valuable to me in later years. A watch is an investment that should last for decades. So a smart wellbeing watch for me should adapt to my future lifestyle and situation. It would still be nice to enjoy some less extreme bike rides or hikes in the nature. Maybe just a walk in the park will be enough at 80?

The Navigil 580 would be my choice. It knows where I go and it gathers a massive amount of data of my wellbeing. It is really future proof, because at some point I want to share recorded info with my family or caretakers, they will have a realtime status of my location, activities and even possible accidents. The watch itself looks good with a classic design, but the best thing goes beyond what's on my wrist. The service it is connected to makes it a true solution for continuing an independent life well into my grey panther years. Stay safe and see you out there!

Navigil addresses the global surge of remote care for aging people

Navigil started shipments of its comprehensive AI-powered telecare solution in July 2020. The company is also forging new mobile operator contracts and opening new subsidiaries. By these actions Navigil addresses the rapidly increasing global demand for remote care solutions.

Espoo, Finland – August 25, 2020 – Navigil, a specialist in white label wellness and personal safety solutions, starts shipping new Navigil 580 wellness wristwatches. Thanks to new contracts with major mobile operators and recently established subsidiaries Navigil's solutions will have wider geographical availability. Presence in new countries, the USA and Japan, will enable better local customer support.

Navigil's latest efforts are in line with the powerful trend to expand remote care, or telecare, in wellness services. Globally, service providers as well as their customers and their loved ones are in dire need for remote care solutions.

"For us, it is absolutely essential to help seniors live independently at home, and simultaneously provide peace of mind for their loved ones and caregivers. We believe that customer demand for good solutions will keep growing. To fill the demand, Navigil's new smart devices with extensive wellness data and location tracking will certainly be a great step forward. They add value to our services, and we are eagerly awaiting them," says Kaj Ignatjew, Managing Director from AddSecure Smart Care Oy.

AddSecure operates the alarm receiving centre, and it has cooperated with Navigil for several years. Its customers are mostly municipalities that provide services to seniors and their relatives.

Navigil's advanced yet easy-to-use wearable wellness technology enables independent living for active aging persons. By offering shared situational awareness of a wearer's wellness to carers it provides peace of mind, while significantly reducing care costs.

"Mobile wellness monitoring is vital to address the care resource issues that our societies and individuals are increasingly challenged with. Our healthcare and elderly care sector customers are facing rapidly increasing demand for mobile care solutions," says Navigil's CEO Matti Räty.

"As I have expressed before, Share and Care is the philosophy of our empathic engineering team. The foundation for quality of life and preventive care is to share the wellness status and to detect adverse long-term trend changes. These crucial demands can be fulfilled with our most advanced model, the Navigil 580 and Navigil Service", Matti Räty says.

Navigil Suite – a complete AI-powered wellness solution

Navigil provides a comprehensive, AI-powered wellness solution called Navigil Suite. As a white label solution, customers can brand it for themselves.

The solution supports active aging people who want to enjoy a long independent life while acknowledging the concerns of their loved ones. People can lead an active life safely knowing that they can easily communicate with family members and care specialists both in emergencies and any time of the day.

Navigil Suite consists of the sensor-equipped Navigil 580 wristwatches that collect data and Navigil Service that analyses and presents the data in an online wellness dashboard. Stylish and showerproof Navigil 580 has a battery life of up to four weeks, a pre-installed SIM card, a built-in SOS phone, and location tracking indoors with beacons and outdoors with GPS. Additionally, it features optical heart rate monitoring, and its multiple sensors collect activity and wellness data.

The Navigil Service performs an AI-based analysis of wellness and activity data. The results are consolidated on a user-friendly online dashboard that displays information on the wearer's wellness. It has extensive reporting and individual customization options such as multiple event-based settings to alert carers on adverse trends. This enables preventive actions prior to severe deterioration in the user's condition. This saves lots of money in social and health care costs.

The dashboard shows a wearer's achievement level of the daily activity target. The service analyses short-term and long-term data of the wearer's activity and wellness. When Navigil Service detects an adverse long-term trend or a sudden change to the worse, it notifies selected carers.

Automatic alarms can be triggered as voice calls as well as SMS, e-mail, and push to App notifications. Service APIs enable integration with external services and alarm receiving centres. Multiple SOS call routing options remain a core functionality of Navigil's solution.

Deployment of Navigil Suite is fast and easy: Navigil 580 is ready to go simply after selecting a wearer profile and defining phone numbers. Navigil Service activates instantly.

The "Cast Away" Virus

Most of us cannot emulate Tom Hanks's character in "Cast Away" by talking to Wilson, a volleyball with a face crafted on its surface. Anxiety and isolation exact a physical toll on the brain's circuitry.

Last time I met my 85 yrs old dad was in early February. The care home he stays at was already alerted about the news from China and Italy. I noticed that some nurses were already wearing facemasks. The Covid-19 pandemic flu was closing in on Northern Europe and Finland. Soon regulations got tighter and the retirement home closed its doors for all other than the staff. The lockdown rules changed everyone's life. Maybe some things changed forever?

Gruelling figures and global news about the inability of many care homes to cope with the virus got me really worried about how dad is doing. The EU Commission was forced to recommend confinement for the elderly until the end of 2020, much to the distress of senior citizens and their families.

In mid April, I saw an article about a French retirement home that decided to let family members visit their love ones, but they were not allowed to touch each other. The director of the facility had a very important reason for his decision:

"The lockdown has had an effect from a medical point of view, but is an inconvenience to deprive our residents of their main reason to live – the affection and love from their families. The elderly are not merely patients, they're first and foremost people. And these people are in need of affection and love."

The Invisible Heroes

At some point I got a call from the head nurse at my dads care home. It would be a lie, if I said that my hand was not shaking when picking up the phone. Fortunately the news were good, Dad was living his life in confinement and due to the Alzheimer disease and memory problems, he might not understand how long ago we actually met. I also know that the professional caregivers taking care of dad are very warm and positive with a true "calling". He likes them, too. Right now these caregivers represent a lifeline to dad. I really hope that these invisible heroes and their efforts will continue to be valued once the pandemic is over.

Social distancing is required to save the lives of the most vulnerable people in our society. Still, it has it's consequences as this new reality makes it hard for all of us, and especially the elderly, to maintain a social and healthy lifestyle. A quick online check showed that some tech companies are launching or already providing tech solutions for the grandmama's and – papa's of the world.

Fighting social isolation

Some care homes have been equipped with basic digital communication aids in pre pandemic times. As for my dad, suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia it is difficult to use these pads. For some senior citizens the pads and computers available do bring some consolation to the isolation. One low tech innovation here in Finland, Helsinki brings the family very close. The facility arranged a shipping container divided in two parts, separated by a window, where the loved ones can meet.

One of my favourite tech devices for the elderly is the Navigil wellness wristwatch. The soon to be launched 580 model has a multitude of features for ensuring information about the user's wellness. Right now, when people are restricted to meet the wristwatch provides some emotional benefits in addition to all the factual information. The user is always reminded that his family is caring. Family or other caregivers can quickly be contacted if there's need. I guess that this creates a greater feeling of security (safeness), especially for those who want and can live independently at home. 24/7 voice connection to family and friends is very valuable and important now and in the future.

As a sidenote, my dad always liked humorous birthday cards and those funny videos he used to email me. Maybe a non-serious add-on to the new Navigil watch could be sending emojis. Dad would be smiling if he got one.

Independent Aging and Freedom

Let's make it easier!

I couldn't wait to turn eighteen, legally be an adult and independent of my parents. At least, sort of independent, as I didn't move out until my studies were finished at 25. Anyway, this feeling of a growing independence is something I cherished, because it's the core of living life on my own terms.

I guess my parents felt the same as young adults in the 1950's. Looking back at their senior years from this perspective, I realized something: as my parents aged, they felt this hard earned independence slipping away as their cognitive and physical health deteriorated. My mother in particular, was very stressed and worried when she started have knee problems. Her fear of looking dependent in others made her stay at home, thus neglecting daily light walks and probably aggravating her knee problems.

My dad was and still is a typical Finnish man. He does not complain. Even when the Alzheimer's disease started to make him dizzy and loose his balance. At some point his sense of direction weakened leading to difficulties in finding the way home. Still, when asked, he never said that something was wrong. Maybe he did not realize the decline in orientational abilities or perhaps he thought that complaining only reveals to others that he is loosing control of his life. We spend our whole lives learning to be independent and take care of ourselves. The thought of relinquishing that responsibility to others must be frightening. But it shouldn't!

Staying independent

Technology provides assistive devices that help elderly people prolong their independent life. These solutions will also keep family and loved ones assured that the elderly person is safe and has no adverse wellbeing trends.

As I was cleaning up dad's house (he moved to a sheltered care facility) I found a couple of blood pressure measuring devices. So, he was concerned about his health. Maybe at that point, he would have benefitted more from a smart wristwatch designed for the elderly. A kind of a discreet 24/7 guardian that would monitor his wellbeing. Us kids could have bought it to him as a present or maybe he would have bought it himself. Initially he could have monitored the results by himself, later it would have been very easy to share the information through the genius service that is built around the wristwatch.

A solution for a solution

I think that a smart device like this is one of the best ways to smoothly take care of the fear of losing control and independence. It is a gentle way of saying "we care about you, but also want help you live your life as independently as you want". Safety features like programmable safe zones with automatic alert and voice connection ensures real time help, wherever the person is. Respiratory, heart rate and activity monitoring is easily shared to the family members and perhaps later to professional care providers. This is not imagination, it all exists – the wristwatch and the service. The only wish is that my dad or I could buy the solution for our own family-centered use. Later on, as dad's condition got worse, it would be easy to involve a care organization assist to our caring clan. Right now, the service always comes with an alarm receiving center service provided by the care organization. Hey Navigil, please make your service and watch available to care clans too.

The Long and Winding Career

In this blog series about my Father, I'm not reflecting on his Alzheimer's disease, but instead comparing his attitude to retirement with mine. He was just 58 when he retired, obviously with an ok pension plan.

I was born in 1962, being 57 right now, cannot think of getting retired next year. I guess dad loved his work. I certainly do and really think that the best years professionally are still ahead. The job market as a whole is shifting back to appreciating experience. I guess it is a growing trend because the world's population is turning grey at an accelerating rate.

Retirement itself is not what it used to be. Many of today's silver surfers do not dream of early retirement. The days of saying goodbye to work completely at 65 or earlier are gone. Spending 20-30 years on the golf course, traveling or gardening sounded nice when I was younger, but the world and attitudes have changed. Even if people have the savings required to support over 20 years of not working, many are looking for more meaningful ways to spend their time.

Fact: By 2050 there will be 58 retired people for every 100 workers, up from 41 today.

Also consider the harsh fact that in the future, we have less people paying for the retirement of the growing senior population. Some of us just have to work longer or at least work on the side of their retirement income to supplement their income. Just how much one is allowed to earn while being allowed the retirement income varies quite a bit depending where you live. I guess that in the future we will see even stricter regulations. The traditional retirement age of 65 has already been pushed up in many countries.

50 shades of grey

JP Morgan made a study about how many seniors work as digital freelancers in the US: nearly half a million seniors participate in the online gig economy. The flexibility of this type of work makes it easy to do while still enjoying retirement, and the opportunity to bring in meaningful income helps you postpone the expensive early years of retirement and reduce the number of years you'll live solely off of your savings.

Workers between the ages of 55 and 75 represent the sharpest rise in independent contractor work arrangements, according to the Center for Economic and Policy Research. An interesting fact from this study is that "For workers ages 65+, however, independent contractors had the highest median weekly earnings in both 2005 and 2017, indicating the economic advantage for the oldest workers of being independent contractors."

A new OECD report, "Working Better with Age", points out that employment of older workers is vital, if prosperity is to be maintained. The Economist writes: "Many people will be happy to work longer. A study of 1000 British retired people found that a quarter thought they had stopped too early (on average they quit at 62). A third said that they had lost their purpose in life after they retired."

Work wellness

If I am going to work well into my 60's and maybe 70's I have to stay healthy and mobile. I also sincerely hope that any hereditary risks of Alzheimer can be minimized by being active both physically and socially. Maybe having a job can work as a remedy, too. Science and personal monitoring technology, i.e. wellbeing watches, are catching up on the early onset symptoms. Here's hoping that we all have many good professional or retirement years to come. After reading this it might be time for a walk?

Anxiety and aging are an old pair

I frequently take part in discussions about the growing population of elderly and decreasing number of nurses to take care of older adults. Many questions arise about my own ageing. Will I have anybody to take care of me? My children should not have to worry about me. I want to act now, so that my life stays independent and safe as I get older.

My target is to live an independent, happy and long life at home. Another goal is that my children wouldn't have to be concerned about my wellbeing. I know they will anyway. At least I have worried about my parents. What could I do to dispel their concern?

I know that physical activity is as important as having the pleasure to spend time with my friends and family. I'll continue my exercises, jogging, golfing and dancing. Every now and then I'll show the activity measures to my kids – see how much I have exercised! Anyways they can't say I'm not active.

Ok, sure I may have some health problems and exercising may cause a risk. What if something happens during my jogging in the woods? Again, the children may be worried. To be honest, I also might have some doubts myself. Should I stay at home instead?

No way

I could do the jogging with my friends. Who would be available for a fun run? We can share the activities we have participated and call for companionship. We elderly can be the inspirers of each other.

When jogging or walking alone and stumbling I may call to my children for help and if they are busy, I'll reach a helpdesk service. No worries.

For healthy living I need to ensure a good nights sleep, meaning long and deep enough to feel refreshed in the morning. This information can easily be monitored, followed up and also shared with my children – if they are interested.

Both personally and for my kids, it is important to be able to live independently but also feel secured. By taking a wellbeing solution in use early enough, I will benefit from the activity and vital sign trends and communication functions targeted for active adults, not to mention the stylish design of the wristwatch. And in later days I will be capable to wear the familiar solution although I get dementia. I may still have my desirable walks without fear. If I get lost my carers could find me by tracking my location. And there is nothing to be ashamed of, even when calling for help.

At least I do my best to enjoy my life.

Today I feel happy, healthy and energetic and that is how I prefer continuing years ahead. To ensure that I take the responsibility of myself now or at the latest when my days of retirement start, I set up the Navigil Suite for me, my family and my closest friends. Me, my family and my friends, we all share and care and enjoy our active living.

The Future Looks Great – and Grey

Last time I saw Fonzie on television, he looked a bit overweight and his grey hair wasn't combed back with pomade anymore. The Fonz, aka mr Henry Winkler was as great as always, now playing an older decidedly uncool acting teacher. He reminded me of my father with his dashing days past and gone.

Writing about design for the elderly, including my 85 yrs. old dad in the last blog, I stumbled upon a lot of interesting data about the ageing population.

Some doomsayers seem to claim that even though global warming is a real threat within a few decades, we are facing a more imminent menace: "the Demographic Time Bomb".

People are living longer today. Though life expectancy tends to be highest in advanced economies, it is growing fastest in emerging markets. The United Nations presents some interesting facts about societal aging:

  • Between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world's population over 60 years will nearly double from 12% to 22%.
  • By 2020, the number of people aged 60 years and older will outnumber children younger than 5 years.
  • In 2050, 80% of older people will be living in low- and middle-income countries.
  • The pace of population ageing is much faster than in the past.
  • All countries face major challenges to ensure that their health and social systems are ready to make the most of this demographic shift.

The number of people aged 60 and over in developing countries is currently twice that of the developed world. And the UN expects a three-to-one ratio by 2030, and a four-to-one ratio by 2050. Societal aging is bad news for the economy:

Fewer people work and contribute to economic growth and more people collect pensions and demand health care.

One of the big challenges of health care and health policy is how to manage the increasing number of elderly patients. Telecare and Mobile Health solutions with remote patient monitoring will certainly help in easing the pressure of health care infrastructure and professionals. These services also make it easier for older adults live their lives independent longer.

My father has been under observation in a couple of hospitals for a total of six months now. He was living alone and started to leave home without keys, getting lost and sometimes falling. I believe that he would have been happy to change his beloved Rolex into a smart wellbeing wristwatch to help him out in his daily chore, keep him connected to the family without being hospitalized.

Just imagine how many dads and moms could continue living at home by using such mHealth devices. As a result there would be enormous financial savings. The biggest reward is naturally the possibility to enjoy life at home with confidence and freedom. In Fonzie's words: "You ain't nobody until you do what you want!"

Midsummer evening in a hammock

The weather is treating us well in this Midsummer evening in Finland. I'm lying in a hammock between two birches and admiring the green leaves of the trees against the blue sky. What a spectacular combination of colors. I remember these views of Päijänne from many years ago, already from my childhood. That time the summers were warm and Lake Päijänne full of perch. The trips to the cottage at the lakeside were the highlights of the summer. They always involved a visit to a smoke sauna and refreshing dips to the lake.

The summers of my childhood have made me grow to be keen on Lake Päijänne. Luckily, I have had the opportunity to continue spending my summers here, at the summer cottage of my dear friend. Over the years, my Midsummers have shifted from the Midsummers of parents of small children to Midsummers of grown-ups. However, the magic of Midsummer has not changed. Friendship, family, empathy and understanding have always been a part of them. They together have created incredible Midsummers, which include everything essential but nothing unnecessary.

I am happy and grateful that our cottage trips still continue. At the same time, I understand my own parents are approaching a stage of life, where taking care of them becomes more and more essential. A moment ago, I called to my mother, whose words stuck in my mind: enjoy Midsummer and good company whenever it is possible. I am relieved I was able to get in touch with her by phone, which is not always obvious. The phone may not always find its way to the owner's hand – it could be accidentally left in a pocket or a bag from where its ringtone is impossible to hear. Fortunately, everything was fine this time. A safe and well-functioning technical solution could give my parents an opportunity to continue living an independent and meaningful life. It could also give us children a certainty that reaching our parents is possible regardless of the distance and time.

This is the conclusion of my Midsummer thoughts in a hammock. Now I can hear the sauna calling me.

Navigil enables independent life for memory loss patients in Helsinki

The City of Helsinki's Service Centre together with the Social and Healthcare Department utilises Navigil's solution to improve the quality of life and safety of customers with memory loss disease. Thanks to advanced tracking services and mobile telecare, the customers can live at home, remain active and be safe at all times.

Espoo, Finland – June 12, 2019 – The City of Helsinki provides Navigil's wristwatches to approximately two hundred customers who suffer from memory loss diseases such as dementia. Customers can live at home, and if they leave outside a predesignated area, they can be tracked and contacted without any delay with the built-in mobile phone of Navigil's wristwatch. The technology has already saved several people's lives and provided peace of mind to families and friends of the users.

"In one case a customer left home on a winter night but didn't respond when our service team called the phone in the wristwatch. The team went to the vicinity, used a tablet and tracked the customer's location in a forested area. The team found the customer fallen in a ditch. Certainly, the customer would have fared very badly without GPS location tracking," says Jere Finne, development manager at telecare and wellbeing services at City of Helsinki's Service Centre.

Two different groups of customers use Navigil's wristwatches. One consists of persons who are waiting for institutional care. The wristwatch secures this period when they stay at home. The second group is still in a relatively good condition, capable to move about and participate in activities outside home. However, they may forget where they are and require help in such situations.

"Our primary goal is to improve the quality of life for our customers, and we are very pleased with the results of this telecare tracking technology. Now, we can let our customers stay home and feel independent and safe. This improves their overall wellbeing and saves lives and resources," says Jere Finne.

Navigil's solution enables individual settings for movement and alarms based on activity, location and time of the day. Geographically, the area can be city-wide during daytime, and very limited at night. If the system detects the user leaving the area or any other unusual event, it can send an automated alarm in a preset order.

The biggest benefit has been the possibility to track the customer immediately and open an instant voice contact. In most cases, the staff of Helsinki Service Centre has been able to direct the customer back home during a call before anything harmful happened and without need to send a pick-up team.

In some cases, a service team has paid a regular visit to customer's home and found it deserted with all lights on. Then it has been easy for the team to use the tracking service and contact the customer.

"In one case an elderly woman had left her home, and our team tracked and contacted her when she was at the railway station. She was about to take the train to another city, claiming she had an appointment with a friend. However, during the conversation it turned out that there was no appointment. She was successfully persuaded to return home", Finne says.

In the future, the City of Helsinki plans to deploy the new Navigil Suite. It includes Navigil 580 wellbeing wristwatch and the cloud-based Navigil Service, which provides advanced AI-based analysis of the user's wellbeing in real-time. The individual analysis is consolidated on a dashboard that is easy to understand.

Navigil unveils a new AI powered wellbeing solution for active seniors

Navigil Suite is a complete wellbeing solution that includes Navigil 580 wristwatches and Navigil Service for active aging persons. By advanced yet easy-to-use technology it enables independent living, provides peace of mind, and significantly reduces care costs.

Espoo, Finland – June 11, 2019 – Navigil, a specialist in white label telecare and personal safety solutions, has unveiled the Navigil Suite that consists of Navigil 580 wellbeing wristwatch and Navigil Service. The solution is powered by the latest mobile communication technology and artificial intelligence. It supports active aging persons who want to secure a long independent life while taking into account the concerns of their closest ones.

"With Navigil Suite, people can lead an active life safely knowing that they can easily communicate with family members and care specialists both in emergencies and any time of the day. Share and Care is the philosophy of our empathic engineering team. Shared wellbeing status and long-term trend alerts are the foundation for quality of life and preventive care," says Matti Räty, CEO at Navigil. "Stylish Navigil 580 with up to four week battery life is a life changing innovation."

Navigil 580 looks like an analog watch, but advanced technology resides under its surface. The optical heart rate monitoring and multiple sensors enable collecting activity and vital signs data. The showerproof watch has a built-in SOS phone, a pre-installed SIM card, and location tracking indoors with beacons and outdoors with GPS.

Identify persons who benefit from preventive care

Navigil Suite provides shared situational awareness of the wearer's wellbeing, and it supports a path from active independent older adults to seniors demanding regular care by their family and care organisations. Navigil Suite AI service analyses data collected by Navigil 580 on user's wellbeing. It alerts carers on adverse trends enabling preventive actions prior to user's severe condition deterioration. For society, this saves lots of money in social and health care costs.

"We've been watching Navigil's progress over a number of years and are excited to see the next phase of development, the 580 wristwatch. Navigil have combined sensitive design with strong technology to create an offering that compares very well with the current marketplace for supported living devices," says Barry Nee, CIO at Care UK.

The results of the AI-based analysis are consolidated on the service's wellbeing dashboard. The dashboard shows wearer's current status and the achievement level of the daily activity target. The service analyses short-term and long-term data of the wearer's activity and vital signs. For instance, poor sleep quality and a gradually delayed start of the day are clear indicators that demand attention. When Navigil Service detects long-term trend or sudden change to the worse, it notifies selected carers.

Navigil Service notification service can trigger automatic emergency calls as well as SMS, e-mail, and push to App notifications. Service APIs enable integration via digital interfaces with external services and Alarm Receiving Centres. Multiple routing options remain a core functionality of Navigil's solution. Deployment of Navigil Suite is fast and easy: Navigil 580 is ready to go simply after selecting a wearer profile and defining phone numbers. Navigil Service activates instantly.

Navigil Suite will become available during Q4/2019.

Years full of life or just life full of years?

The saying that 60 is the new 50 reflects one of the biggest changes in modern society. The population as a whole is getting older at a faster rate than ever. We are all expected to live longer than our grandparents. Prior to the 1900s, average life expectancy was best estimated at thirty years of ages across all major regions of the world.

The other big change is how families are fragmented due to work, studies, temporary assignments or the lure of retirement destinations. Fortunately, a plethora of technology choices help us keeping in touch with our loved ones, old and young. Computers, pads, smartphones, smartwatches and even our television is filled with apps that help us to connect with others. But for some reason online participation is declining at ages between 65 – 73 and even stronger in the 75+ population.

I believe that designers are not focusing enough on thinking about user friendliness for the older market. When products are created for the elderly, they tend to be ugly and an unwanted signal fragility. Imagine if you would need a walker or a cane. I think you would resist using it, because it is seen as a medical device. Once upon a time, a cane was considered stylish. My dad, now 85 and with MCI does not want to use a mobile phone or smart wrist watch that is clearly designed for seniors. He says that it would label him as old in a negative way.

Every designer and marketer in the world will someday join this evergrowing segment. Maybe we should all imagine how the world looks and feels when the world looks blurred, the crickets stay quiet and touching your toes is a sweet memory. It must be possible to make items for the elderly that they want to wear with pride and stylish enough that a person of any age would want one.

Technology products that are challenging in their complexity, should still be easy and intuitive to use. Personally, I do not recall many user interfaces, that did not require a deep dive into the manual before use.

Any product or service, should be designed to meet the needs of all people who wish to use it. The 7 Principles of Universal design do apply to the highest degree for designing products, services and environments for older adults. Getting them interested in technology requires framing it in terms of how it can add value to their lives; to keep on living independently add to their wellbeing and stay in touch with friends and family.

City of Helsinki Service Centre, Healthoperator Ltd and Navigil Ltd collaborate to improve the quality of life of social care dementia customers

Espoo, Finland – June 12, 2018

The prime functions of City of Helsinki Service Centre include the provisioning and development of wellbeing services as well as supporting aging in place at home with innovative and personalized care services. Healthoperator Ltd supported by Navigil Ltd is delivering the telecare tracking technology and related services used by Service Centre. This two-year contract was awarded to Healthoperator in June 2017 based on a public tender.

Safe and confident mobility

"The independent and safe mobility has been a prime design criterion when we defined the requirements for the awarded contract. We did not start with an aim to reduce costs but with the goal of improving the quality of life of our social care customers. We want that social care customers feel safe and independent and that we provide peace of mind to their family and friends" says Riitta Laanala, Head of telecare and wellbeing services, City of Helsinki Service Centre.

Preventive care

"We have customers whose needs can be served with a door exit alarm, however there are many whose needs are more demanding. When an active person no longer remembers where home is, we can use a service with tracking capability. A mobile telecare solution with location capability brings wellbeing benefits; when customers have the courage to remain mobile despite of the dementia they also retain their capability to independently manage their life longer" sums Laanala up.

Personalized service

"It is a huge benefit that the settings of the tracking function can be tailored to match individual needs. We have customers who manage their daily shopping fine but occasionally forget where home is. Some customers can wander as far as 10 kilometres away from home safely whereas for some customers the day time safe zone must be defined much smaller with even more stringent settings for night time. The possibility to place a phone call to the tracking telecare wristwatch is extremely useful; sometimes by calling the telecare wristwatch we can persuade the person to return home and avoid sending a search party to pick the person up", continues Laanala.

Smooth-running collaboration

"Healthoperator strives to be an one-stop-shop technology partner for care providers. The goal of our rapidly expanding service portfolio is care process digitalization that enables provisioning of high-quality customer centric care effectively. The smooth-running and seamless collaboration with Service Centre and Navigil has been an important enabler for reaching this goal. Development and implementation of new technology has been running smoothly with good partners" says Riitta Tiuraniemi, CEO of Healthoperator.

Independent Living saves costs

"We support care providers in their quest to enable meaningful and safe aging in place despite of increasingly aging population's demands on scarce care resources. Independing living at home and preventive care enabled by monitoring of person's wellbeing significantly reduce the social and health care costs. The collaboration with City of Helsinki Service Centre and Healthoperator is a fine example of innovative development of care services", says Matti Räty, CEO of Navigil.

The municipal enterprise Service Centre consists of catering services and telephone and wellbeing services. We provide high-quality catering, telephone and wellness services that are tailored to the specific needs of our different customers. Currently, we ensure our customers' well-being and safety in over 500 locations with a highly skilled staff of approximately 1,600 professionals. You can meet us all around Helsinki e.g. in schools and other educational establishments, day care facilities, hospitals and health centres, retirement homes and private homes.

HealthOperator is a service innovation company, that provides easy and reliable remote monitoring services for healthcare and personalized wellbeing and illness prevention for different target groups. For business' and public organizations, we're the technology partner providing all the 'in-home'-technology. Our services include installations, maintenance and upgrading, all fast and reliably so that healthcare providers can concentrate fully to care.

Navigil expands availability of wearable telecare solution in the UK

Espoo, Finland – March 1, 2018

Stylish Wristwatch Packed with Mobile Phone, Location and Activity Monitoring Features

Navigil, a specialist in white label telecare and personal safety solutions, has unveiled a partnership with Elmbridge Borough Council in the UK. The partnership makes Navigil's Rafael service and wearable personal safety wristwatches available to clients in Surrey and parts of London under the ST Pathfinder brand. Navigil and Elmbridge Borough Council have ensured that by working collaboratively with Mole Valley Borough Council and Surrey Telecare, a solution has been brought to the market that represents customers' requirements.

Rapidly growing cost of elderly care may become unbearable unless independent living at home can be extended. At the UK scale Navigil's solution can save 5 billion pounds sterling of social and healthcare costs annually. Activity monitoring can be used to identify persons whose condition is on a downward trend. Early detection and implementation of corrective actions reduces care costs and improves quality of life while providing peace of mind to family, friends and professional care providers.

"Most telecare products currently in the market resemble devices used in a hospital setting, labelling their users as patients," says Matti Räty, CEO at Navigil. "When developing the S3 we focused on improving utilization of mobile networks in rural areas by adding 3G capabilities to the wristwatch, while keeping the ultra-low power technology and telecare specific features in a stylishly designed analogue watch with real watch hands. Our customers also asked us to add an activity level display in the Navigil S3 to enable users to see their progress on achieving their daily activity target."

Councillor Mrs Ruth Lyon, the Portfolio Holder for Social Affairs in Elmbridge Borough Council, says: "ST Pathfinder gives people the freedom to go out-and-about, whilst providing piece of mind to a family member or carer. If you know someone that would benefit from this technology, then please get in touch with the Elmbridge Borough Council Community Alarm team who will be able to assist you".

The Navigil solution consists of a mobile telecare wristwatch with 3G/2G phone, GPS tracking and activity monitoring features. It is supported by mobile communication, location and management services that enable a blended care model and optimal use of scarce care resources. With a single press of a button the Navigil S3 or S1 places an alarm call and sends a location report. The Navigil Rafael service routes the alarm calls to either a designated family member or in case of Elmbridge Borough Council customers to Mole Valley's 24/7 alarm receiving centre. Navigil S3 and S1 can also automatically send an alarm with location information if the wristwatch user leaves home or exits designated safe zone or when the user is immobile for a longer period of time.

Navigil expands market reach with a roaming agreement with BT

Espoo, Finland, February 27, 2018

The Navigil S3 wristwatch and Rafael service is a safety solution for seniors as well as vulnerable and cognitively impaired persons. It enables families to save large amounts in care costs while improving quality of life and providing peace of mind.

Navigil, a specialist in white label personal safety and tracking solutions has announced a roaming data and voice communication agreement with BT.

The agreement with an award-winning telecom provider enables Navigil to broaden the availability of its products reliably and cost effectively. In addition to the EU markets, the recently launched S3 wearable telecare and personal safety wristwatch and the related Rafael service will be available for customers globally supported by BT's worldwide presence.

Blended care model powered by Navigil

With sophisticated and easy-to-use technology, Navigil S3 and Navigil Rafael service enable the vulnerable persons to get timely assistance either from family and friends or from a 24/7 alarm receiving centre.

Navigil Rafael service includes industry benchmark routing features for help request calls and notifications. This enables family members and friends to share the care workload reliably and safely. By the Rafael service caregivers can easily define a weekly prioritized calendar schedule for routing help request calls and alarms among themselves.

Secure routing ensures that the reachability sequence doesn't end up on a voice mail box. Instead, the call is automatically connected to the next person in the sequence if there is no response from a caregiver.

Additionally, Rafael service supports automated are-you-well call setups between a loved one and caregivers. Everyone involved in the care provision is able to know the status at all times and can rest assured that vulnerable person is safe and reachable.

"At Navigil, we are committed to deliver secure and high availability services to our customers and end users. Working with a telecom provider such as BT enables us to do this not only in the EU but more importantly in other global markets", says Matti Räty, CEO of Navigil. "Reliability, control and flexibility are very important criteria in telecare and personal safely solutions. Thus, we are very happy to be in good hands with the BT Control Centre".

"BT has a proud history of innovation and is a natural partner for Navigil. I believe the performance, flexibility and reliability of our IoT platforms and support team gives Navigil the high level of confidence they need for a global deployment", says Chris Sims, MD Marketing & IoT, BT.

Navigil announced the Navigil S3 safety wristwatch

Espoo, Finland, February 21, 2018

The Navigil S3 is a safety wristwatch for seniors as well as vulnerable and cognitively impaired persons. It enables families and societies to save massive amounts in social and health care costs while improving quality of life and providing peace of mind.

Navigil, a specialist in white label personal safety and tracking solutions has announced the Navigil S3 safety wristwatch for seniors, vulnerable and cognitively impaired persons. It is an upgrade to Navigil S1, a success in more than 30 countries worldwide. Both S3 and S1 wristwatches are made in Finland, and they feature an analogue Swiss watch movement.

Telecare 2.0, powered by Navigil

Rapidly growing costs of elderly care may become unbearable unless independent living at home can be extended. The Navigil S3 uses sensor and location technology to monitor and report a wearer's daily activity level and routines. It is possible to detect a S3 wearer with an underlying health problem and to avoid hospitalization before the condition deteriorates. When corrective actions are taken early enough, costs are minimized and quality of life maintained. For instance, the UK could save 5 billion pounds sterling annually in social and health care costs.

With sophisticated and easy-to-use technology, Navigil S3 supports a blended care model for getting timely assistance. When necessary, the wearer can easily contact either family members or an alarm receiving centre, directly or in a prioritized and secured sequence. The call is automatically connected to the next contact if there is no response. Additionally, the Navigil S3 is a lifesaver for memory loss patients by real-time location tracking and GPS geofencing capabilities. Moreover, it enables AI-based predictive care driven by wellbeing and activity monitoring.

"At Navigil, we are committed to enhance senior citizens' quality of life while providing peace of mind to their beloved ones. We enable families and societies to save massive amounts in social and health care costs", says Matti Räty, CEO of Navigil. "We have proven that by investing in the Navigil solution on Monday, ROI will be met by Thursday".

The Navigil S3 empowers the wearer. For individual users, it is packed with smart features such as an activity sensor. The wearer can see what percentage of a daily activity target he/she has reached. This may encourage a more active daily lifestyle and assist in rehabilitation after trauma events.

"We expect that our active customers will be pleased to wear a stylish wristwatch such as Navigil's S1 and S3 – they have been waiting for a device that doesn't label them as a person in need of help. The device is a powerful tool that enables us to strengthen our leading market position in data-driven and secure homecare and wellbeing services", says Mr. Aki Kuivalainen, CBO, Stella Kotipalvelut Oy in Finland.
